March is National Nutrition month, a month to focus on making healthy food decisions and developing healthy habits. This year’s theme, “Food Connects Us”,  is a time to celebrate the food traditions that connect us to our cultures, families and friends. When we gather around the table for a meal it allows us the time to check in with one another, reconnect and talk about our lives.

There are many ways you can celebrate National Nutrition Month and begin bringing healthy habits in your home.  Check out a few of our ideas on how you can celebrate with your family:

  1. Commit to trying a new fruit or veggie every week throughout this month. Look for something that is fresh and local for some added fun.
  2. Plan and eat more meals together around the table. Eating together as a family encourages children to socialize and talk more about food, and can be a time to talk about where food and food traditions come from.
  3. Let everyone help while prepping the meal. There are lots of things kids of all ages can do in the kitchen to help. Cleaning fruits and veggies, measuring ingredients and setting out the dinner plates are great ways to get started.
  4. Remove screens from meal time. Eating dinner at the table and put the phones and tablets away while eating can take away distractions from talking to one another.
